HEY HEY HEY

I'm finally back. Just to mention that it has been a crazy 2 and 1/2 months.
Last week was a big week for dancers in Singapore. Haven't had this feeling of relief after a major production for a long time but i guess it was a very good experience both in dance and management.

Anyway this will be just a some break cos we'll be having another dance production by NUS dance blast in September and Code Edge in October....YAYYYY.

Missing in action

Guess that its been sometime since i've posted something on the blog, but just to update, i've been busy with rehearsals and planning since the start of April. But the quote that keeps me going.

Its the hardship and pain that makes it valuable. Hope that everyone reading this would continue to inspirations in their daily lives to work towards their dreams.

Taking it to the stage

Just some new thoughts from a performance i watched recently. I must first mention that there has been a lot of effort and money put into this production. This stage is definietly not a cheap place to use for any performance. One regretful thing i have to say is that i feel very sad that some items put on stage were not up to the standard of the stage it is on.

I feel sad not because of the bad performance but that such an extravagant stage was given to people trying to do dance moves when there are struggling artiste who spend their lives trying to get their works seen on stage. It might be the lack of connections for funding or just that the people are not aware of the stage they are on.

However it is, this is not to put down anyone but to tell people to cherish every performance chance they have might it be on a small or big stage.

The little details

Sometimes its the little details that makes all the difference.

As how the little girl was learning to do the 'whatever', she put in all the details in adding the eye roll and hand up that made the moment a classic. Sometimes its just the little observations that enables the little girl to emulate that 'whatever' attitude.

Taking it from the aspect of dance, some people just look so good doing certain movements and it all boils down to noticing and adding the details. A little angle change or adding a certain attitude is all you need to carry off the style and movements. Applications of observations.

P/S: On a sidenote.... i love this kid, she's got the attitude!!!

Choreography and steps

Been catching ABDC on youtube these few days. With the favs being Kaba and Jabba of course.
Watching how they project concepts and visuals really amazes me.

Of course the steps will play a part but as a choreographer, you need to create visuals rather than making step based movements. But the most impressive was lates one by Jabbawockies (think i got my spelling right).

Dissecting it, it had so many things happening at one time that you don't know what to look at. The whole visual was more like a segment of a musical than purely a dance. There are 3 to 4 different dynamics at parts of the perfomance that makes it so exciting. Not an easy task for the choreographer especially.

Organization and growing

I realized that dancers are usually not very good organizers but i guess its because of the artisitic and freeform nature? But it would be stereotyping to put all dancers into this category.

There's a very important point in getting organised especially in dance. Taking the example of Kaba modern which is one of my favs for the moment. It is not easy to organise a rehearsal for so many people.

Getting everybody down for practice is already not easy. To hit together with precise timing will require even more effort and time. Lots of Respect for that.

Also another thing is the passing on of knowledge. Also from the example of Kaba modern, i see that they have grown much in their 15 years of history. I believe they have been passing on both the values and knowledge. Both the techniques and passion. Growth happens when the things are accumulated as a group over time. Something for us to think about...

Studio and Street Dancers

Had a great night at Hip Hop Nite 2008.

Some thoughts that came after after a friend mentioned about the difference between street and studio dancers.

The thing about studio dancers are learning techniques and movments which are sort of part of the "syllabus" whereas street dancers have more creativity and the perfomance element in them. Generally the 'feel' for the music is the basic element in dance but the visual point in the body movement has also an important role in creating dance. This groove or "feel" for the music which some dancers generally lack is something for us to think about.

Been about a week since Funka Finals. As what a fellow dance-mate mentioned, it was a big night for hip hop locally. This will definitely go down as a major event in the dance history in Singapore.

Great dancing, great music but there was much to be improved on the organizing part. This competition is one of the longest running in the dance scene in Singapore. And i believe with the history of over 10 years, there should be a minimum standard maintained. Quite diappointed in the management this year...

Kudos to all the dancers for the great show though.

Getting Inspired

I believe there were many in the audience which are inspired in one way or another after the funka prelims yesterday.

We never fail to be amazed with dancers who have superb techniques, charismatic stage presence and “feel” for the music. At a point or another, we have set our benchmark on a group or if not, an individual as to where we want to end up.

This kind of feeling has always generated enough thoughts to get us wanting to work harder and push ourselves over our limits. And usually due to a performance we watched or someone we saw. This would be categorized as the “pull factor”.

However, I believe we should also have this “push factor” within ourselves to want to grow more and be better than the day before. We cannot be too dependent by external factors only.

Anyway, finals will on the Jan 27th at youth park from 5pm onwards.

Been complained about again....

Just some updates for this year.

Helping a team do some choreography for Funka. Apparently, a lot of teams have choreographers to help them this year. It's becoming more of a choreographers' showcase rather than just a dance competition. The items will be something to look forward to but there are other aspects of the competition which require some much needed improvement.

Also, i'm looking forward to sessioning for this year ahead. Lots to learn and lots to train on.
This would also be a busy year ahead with the number of dance productions, showcases and competitions that will be coming up. Things are really looking up for the dance scene this year.

Dance for a reason

Seeing many dancers stop dance for whatever reasons they might have is always sad.

Knowing your purpose of dance is a very important aspect of being a dancer. Sometimes we get distracted by the things around. It might be work, might be relationships…. And sometimes it might just wanting to improve yourself so badly that you get blinded and just train so hard that you don’t even realize what you are training for.

Keeping yourself in tune with your directions keeps yourself in check.

Code Edge and Project Element Singapore (part 2)

Code Edge and Project Element Singapore came to a close.
Saw a lot, learnt a lot more.

I guess Code Edge was one of the most high-stress performance i've been part of. Even not competing, i could feel the tension level backstage. Teams marking through steps backstage, nervous-ness on the competitors faces, doing pre-performance rites to psych themselves up.

As much as it is over, the experience is was very much worth the time and effort put in. Think that it was a really good showcase all the dancers put up. Really glad to see the local dance scene and people growing at each of these events.

All in all, its time for reflection and time for re-organization in the aftermath...

3 classes in a row at that level is no joke. Brain-fried after each one...hahaha.

It is no doubt an inspiring experience though.

The emphasis in dance should be placed on the aspect on musicality after there is a stable technique foundation.
Music forms the most basic aspect of dance. It is where the movements are inspired and created from.
Dancing from the "inside" not at the mirror.

New thoughts...

Mindset of the dancer.
It charts the direction the person will be heading towards. As part of "knowing what you are dancing for?" A postive attitude and a willingness to learn sets a person apart within a given timeframe.

This has been a proven fact for many examples. I've seen people who were committed to their daily trainings and open to comments growing exponentially.
Actually quite a shocking rate...

In another sense, learning humbly and being committed to your trainings are the core of improvement.

As what a dancer told me before.

"你跳的好是人家说得，不是你自己说的。"
"Its for people to say if you're good, not for yourself to say even if you think you're good."

Commitment to little details

A very important aspect of life is commitment. Seems like a simple word but holds a lot more meaning. How committed are you to your direction in life, to the things you dedicate yourself to. Little things you do in you daily life makes up the big picture of your life.

In dance, it works the same way.

Stretching that side spilt just by another 1 cm each time.
Spending an additional 5 minutes thinking through steps before you sleep.
Going on your tiptoes while brushing your teeth.

Dance as a reflection of self

Have you thought about dance as a reflection of your personality?

If you are someone who is very enthusiastic about everything, your dance would be high energy based. A cool person would have styles pertaining to sleek and smooth movements.

When you really dance, you tend to let go of your conscious self. Enjoy dance, it’s the time where you can really be expressing yourself as ..….. yourself.

Dance as an expression

Being able to emote through dance is a gift to all dancers. No matter what the feeling may be, dance can be used as an outlet of expression.

It comes to the next point on how you utilize these emotions when you dance. It’s the same with acting. You will be able to let the audience experience what you feel only when you are truly emoting it.

I remembered once a teacher mentioned that only when you grow older and experience life would you be able to harness these emotions that will touch the audience.

This is what makes it an art and something to be appreciated…

I've always had this thought about dance whether its style or technique that is more important. It finally dawned to me that only with techniques that you can execute movements with ease.
This then translates as style as what many people see.

Just watching this clip made me think more deeply into dance. More often than not we are doing steps and trying to move our body to match the music, but watching this clip has made me think about more.

Moving the body with the music as part of it. Immersing yourself as part of the music and emoting the movements in dance. Dancing and not just doing steps...
